Brittney Griner to Turn 32 in Russian Prison
WNBA star Brittney Griner will celebrate her 32nd birthday on the 243rd day of her detention in Russia.
WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was arrested at Moscow airport on February 17, turns 32 today.
Griner was sentenced to 9 years in prison on August 4 for smuggling drugs into the country, just under the 10-year maximum sentence. After the trial, her lawyer, Maria Blagovolina, said the sentence was "absolutely unreasonable".
WNBA star Griner's lawyers appear in court. The appeal hearing will begin on October 25.
Griner's wife, Cherelle, told CSB Morning that Brittney is a "hostage".
"On its face it just seems like my wife is a hostage. To know that our government and the foreign government is sitting down and negotiating for her release? She's a hostage," Cherelle said.
