The death toll is rising in the fire that broke out on the ferry The Lady Mary Joy 3 from Mindanao Island in the Philippines to Jolo Island.
Basilan Governor Jim Hataman said in a statement after the accident that there were 250 passengers on the ferry and 31 people died.
Hataman reported that 23 people were injured in the burning ferry, and efforts to rescue 7 missing passengers continue.
Stating that the ferry was towed to the Basilan coast, Hataman said, "Many people lost their lives due to the fire. The investigation into the incident continues."
