The death toll in Hurricane Freddy, which hit Africa, exceeded 500
The death toll in Hurricane Freddy, which also affected Malawi after Mozambique, rose to 522.
The loss of life in Hurricane Freddy exceeded 500. With the loss of 438 people in Malawi, 67 people in Mozambique and 17 people in Madagascar due to Hurricane Freddy, which was effective in East Africa, the total loss of life reached 522. In Malawi, which was hit hardest by the hurricane, thousands of people were left homeless, while more than 345,000 were affected by the hurricane. 50,000 people were displaced by the hurricane in Mozambique.
In a statement made by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), it was stated that the storm, which has been effective over the Indian Ocean for 32 days, may be the longest storm on record. Given that Freddy has weakened periodically over the last 32 days, it is expected that it will take several months to assess whether Hurricane John has broken the record for Hurricane John in 1994, which lasted 31 days and is known as the longest storm on record.
