The Dual Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the first experiment to test a "planetary defense method" against near-Earth objects, carried out in collaboration with the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Johns Hopkins University Department of Applied Physics, has achieved its purpose.
In the statement made by NASA, it was announced that the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos, which was hit by the spacecraft launched by NASA on September 27 as part of the DART mission, has changed.
NASA's DART spacecraft saw Dimorphos change its orbit around Didymos by 32 minutes, reducing the 11 hour 55 minute orbit to 11 hours 23 minutes.
NASA President Bill Nelson made a statement after the successful completion of the DART mission; "This mission demonstrates that NASA is trying to be ready for whatever the Universe has to offer."
