Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has released a report on the number of journalists killed worldwide. According to the report; A total of 1,668 journalists have lost their lives in the last 20 years.
In the statement made by RSF, it was stated that the years 2003-2022 were the years of death for journalists and more than 80 journalists were killed on average every year during this period.
Iraq and Syria Danger Zone for Journalists
In the report, which states that the most dangerous countries for the journalism profession are Iraq and Syria, it was reported that a total of 578 journalists were killed in the last 20 years, 299 in Iraq and 279 in Syria. The announced number accounts for more than a third of journalists killed worldwide.
According to the report, which states that 2012 and 2013 were the darkest periods for journalists due to the war in Syria, 144 journalists were killed in 2012 and 142 in 2013.
