Beyoğlu District Governorate announced that it has banned the demonstrations in Taksim of November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
Referring to the call from some social media accounts, the district governor's office said in a statement, "Considering the posts on social media, the events to be held may cause resentment in the society due to some social sensitivities, this situation may threaten the social peace."
Despite the action banned by the district governor's office, hundreds of women took to the streets. Taking extensive security measures, the police intervened against the women who wanted to make a statement or shout slogans.
According to information obtained from local news sources, women who wanted to walk freely were detained by the police. Journalists trying to broadcast live from the scene were also detained by the police.
