In the last census, when only natural islands with a surface area of more than 100 square meters are taken into account, Nagasaki province was the province with the most islands with 1,479 islands, followed by Hokkaido province in the north of the country with 1,473 islands.

While Kagoshima province ranks third with 1,256 islands in the list, it was determined that there are 861 islands in Iwate province and 691 islands in Okinawa province. It was noted that the increase in the number of islands within the country's borders more than doubled was due to the developments in surveillance and surveillance technologies.
